TL XML – SOM Product Release

Table of contents

Overview

The SOM Product Release transaction is an XML-based message used to indicate that a serialized pharmaceutical product or batch has successfully passed quality review and other product release processes and is now authorized for downstream processing—such as shipment, aggregation, or inventory movement.

This transaction acts as a digital release signal with Serialized Operations Manager (SOM) to identify and confirm that products are ready to be released into the supply chain.

The SOM Product Release transaction adheres to TraceLink’s TL XML schema and integrates seamlessly with internal systems to automate release workflows and enable traceable, auditable product movement.

Key Use Cases

  • Authorize serialized products for shipment.
  • Digitally release product inventory for downstream operations (e.g., pick/pack/ship).
  • Ensure compliance with DSCSA and global track and trace regulations.
  • Provide a system-of-record checkpoint for released products.
  • Trigger downstream processes such as Sales Shipment, Aggregation, or QA review.
  • Support audit readiness with traceable product release history.

Data Elements Included

A TL XML – SOM Product Release transaction includes:

  • Serialized Product Identifiers (EPCs): SGTINs or SSCCs of the serialized units or containers being released.
  • Release Timestamp: Date and time when the SOM release was authorized.
  • Customer ID: Identifier of the customer or trading partner associated with the order.
  • Sales Order Reference: ID linking the release to a specific sales order or delivery.
  • Business Location: GLN or internal code of the releasing facility.
  • Disposition: Typically set to "released", or "ready_for_shipment".
  • Review Notes (optional): Free-text notes from quality reviewers or automated systems.
  • Transaction ID (optional): Unique identifier for the release event.
  • Digital Signature (optional): For data integrity and regulatory compliance.

Benefits of TL XML – SOM Product Release

  • Digitally confirms product release clearance before product movement.
  • Prevents unauthorized shipment of flagged or high-risk products.
  • Maintains compliance with U.S. and international track and trace laws.
  • Automates downstream workflows based on product release status.
  • Provides traceable documentation for audits and regulatory inspections.

Business Process: TL XML – SOM Product Release

The SOM Product Release transaction may fit into the serialized order fulfillment and compliance workflow as follows:

  • SOM Product Release (TL XML) is triggered once the order passes quality and other release evaluation.
  • Released products are eligible for shipping, aggregation, or further handling.
  • TraceLink logs the release for traceability and compliance reporting.
